How to Build a Dropshipping Business: Dream or Real, Successful Company? Shopify or WordPress+WooCommerce
During my talks on adplist.org, I’ve had the pleasure, on several occasions, of talking about building personal projects — including as a way to generate extra income — through dropshipping ventures.
This time I spoke with Andrea from the USA (Texas) about his pet-dropshipping project.
In the wonderful world of the internet, you see plenty of “gurus” suggesting that starting a dropshipping business is the perfect solution: build an eshop, go to sleep, and wake up the next morning with your bank account full of transactions.
The Reality of Dropshipping Is a Bit Different
Dropshipping is a business model that lets you sell third-party products without needing to hold your own inventory.
It Can Be a Good Business, But It’s Worth Weighing Up a Few Aspects
- Find a good product, ideally a niche one, and preferably not available on Amazon at a lower price than you can offer.
- Choose reliable suppliers who won’t cause shipping problems, delivery delays, or customs issues.
- As the dropshipping business owner, you’re the one responsible for sales and refunds to the end customer, even though you can always work out issues with your suppliers.
- Offer an extra service that sets you apart, such as support, tailored advice, and closeness to the customer.
Very Important Factors to Consider When Starting a Dropshipping Business
- Do the math on your real costs: branding, sales platform, social media management, blog, and advertising costs to turn visits into sales.
- The sales platform (eshop) today is often the “easiest” part of a dropshipping project. Tools like Shopify or WordPress + WooCommerce make it possible to set up an online store in an agile, relatively fast, and scalable way.
That doesn’t mean giving up on the dream of building your own project.
Just be careful: crunch the numbers properly so the investment turns into a success rather than a possible failure.
